Project Completion: Fire Compartmentation Works at The Guildhall, Worcester
Neal R Shipley & Co Ltd is proud to have delivered a comprehensive package of fire compartmentation works at The Guildhall, Worcester – a landmark building with significant historic and civic importance. The project required meticulous planning, sensitive working methods, and a fully coordinated approach to ensure all fire safety upgrades were completed to modern standards while respecting the fabric of this heritage site.
Our team began by establishing a temporary site compound and installing an external access stairway to reach the roof-level lead gutters, followed by the safe removal and disposal of the existing timber access walkway. Localised insulation was cleared to expose rafters, with temporary access platforms installed to facilitate the erection of fire barriers. Sections of timber floor decking were carefully removed and reinstated to allow full installation of the compartmentation system.
Certified specialists installed a full suite of fire barriers and fire curtains throughout the designated roof voids. These systems were supported by new fire‑clad softwood frameworks, forming compliant access hatches designed to maintain fire integrity while allowing future maintenance access. New fire-rate access panels were also installed as part of the upgraded compartmentation strategy.
As part of the wider works, we provided new softwood access ladders to the enclose roof void above the Randall Room, improving safe access for ongoing inspections and maintenance.
Once all fire protection measures were installed and inspected, the temporary access systems and site compound were removed. All areas were fully reinstated, cleaned and left compliant with current fire safety regulations.
